Shayna Meikle, also known as Pigeon, is a Long Beach community member who took her passion for skating and turned it into multiple businesses. The first was the opening of Pigeon’s Roller Skate Shop in the heart of downtown Long Beach. Pigeon believes that roller skating is a beneficial outlet that brings people joy and builds a strong and healthy community. The increasing popularity of roller skating made it evident that safe spaces for skaters were needed. So in 2021, Pigeon took it upon herself to build that space and opened up Pigeon’s Roller Rink. Their mission statement today reads: “Our goal is to provide a fun, safe and educational place for people of all ages and skill levels to enjoy the sport of roller skating. We are passionate about providing resources to the roller skate community and beyond.” Pigeon’s love for roller skating is evident in the way that she cares for the members of her community. Through this passion the community has grown and the safe spaces for skaters have increased. This project aims to serve as a persuading tool to help Pigeon open up a permanent roller rink for the roller skating community.
